serpentine
Serpentine is the state rock of California. It is formed near tectonic plate boundaries and on the sea floor. It is slightly toxic, and the soil around deposits of serpentine lacks minerals most plants need to live. The plants that are able to grow in serpentine soil are rare, and often endangered. Sometimes you can find serpentine deposits by searching for miniature flowers growing in dense clusters close to the earth.
Collecting these jade-green stones has been a habit/tradition in my family for as long as I can remember.
